My own character has no arrow/pointer on the map representing his position.
In the beginning of the game there was no arrow/pointer-issue but recently (in the last game-days) it just keeps disappearing. (screenshot from game-time:1st year, 27th in summer in Pumpkinvale).
Restarting the game doesn't solve the problem.
I experienced the same. Even while the map was opened and I walked around he arrow just disappeared, came back and went away again.
